Topic
Combining Chirality with Parity-Time Symmetry in Metamaterials
Description
In this webinar hosted by the Photonic Metamaterials Technical Group, Maria Kafesaki will summarize the research of the PPM Group at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) on chiral parity-time (PT) symmetric systems, and general chiral gain-loss systems/metamaterials.
Dr. Kafesaki will show that despite the mirror-asymmetry of chiral metamaterials, achieving complete parity-time symmetry in such systems is possible, and it is associated with a variety of novel propagation and scattering characteristics. These characteristics include mixed PT-related phases, multiple exceptional points, asymmetric reflection, asymmetric wave ellipticity, and others. Most of the above characteristics are easily controllable externally and can be exploited in various applications related to electromagnetic wave polarization control.
Another issue related with chirality and PT-symmetry is the potential of the PT-symmetric systems for molecular chirality sensing. Dr. Kafesaki will briefly discuss this potential at the close of the webinar.
