Hybrid (M-type) Fibers for Dispersion Management
Recently, hybrid fibers (also called as M-type fibers) have been in high demand due to the ability of such fibers to manage the dispersion sign and its slope by appropriate choice of the fiber parameters. This feature is especially required for the spectral range of Yb-doped optical fibers operation (about 1 um), where standard commercially available fibers have only normal dispersion.

In the webinar hosted by the OSA Fiber Modeling and Fabrication Technical Group, Svetlana Aleshkina from the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dianov Fiber Optics Research Center will discuss the history, guiding mechanism, main features and recent advances of hybrid fibers. This webinar will review modeling and fabrication aspects, including some specific techniques, for hybrid fibers creation. In addition, the webinar will provide information concerning limitations of using such fibers and ways to potentially overcome those limitations. Finally, the prospects for using hybrid fibers and their potential applications will be discussed.

Svetlana S. Aleshkina
Senior Researcher @Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dianov Fiber Optics Research Center
Svetlana S. Aleshkina received B.E. and M.E. degrees in physics from Mordovian State University, Saransk, Russia, in 2006 and 2008, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree in laser physics from Fiber Optics Research Center of the Russian Academy of Science (FORC RAS), Moscow, Russia, in 2012. She is currently Senior Researcher at the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dianov Fiber Optics Research Center. Her research activities are connected with development of special passive and active optical fibers for creation of all-fiber laser schemes (master oscillators, high power lasers and amplifiers). Area of expertise include rare-earth-doped fiber lasers and amplifiers, Special optical fibers with anomalous dispersion in 1 um spectral range, Large-mode area fibers, High power Yb-doped lasers, Pulsed and Continuous wave lasers at 0.98 um.
