Optics/Photonics Webinars from the PBL Projects - Intro to Problem Based Learning
Each one-hour live webinar (45 minutes of material, 15 minutes for questions) will include links to additional material such as applications and hands-on activities on the www.pblprojects.org website. Webinars will be conducted mainly at the algebra/trig level suitable for teachers of students in high school and community colleges. (Students are welcome too!) Materials will be based on the textbook by professors Donnelly and Massa, LIGHT: An Introduction to Optics and Photonics, ed. 2. Recordings of webinars will be available OSA site where available.

Introduction to Problem Based Learning
What is problem-based learning (PBL)? How can it improve student understanding? We’ll demonstrate the use of one of the PBL Projects “Challenges” (case studies) and share access to the online Challenge library.

Dr. Nicholas Massa,
Chairman of the Optics and Photonics Technology Department @Springfield Technical Community College
Dr. Nicholas Massa is Chairman of the Optics and Photonics Technology Department at Springfield Technical Community College. He holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Western New England University and a PhD in Educational Leadership/Adult Learning from the University of Connecticut. He was the 2010 recipient of the SPIE Educator of the Year award, 2017 Beacons of the Photonics Industry award, and is the co-author of the textbook "Light: Introduction to Optics and Photonics.” He has over 30 years of experience as an educator, educational researcher, engineer and consultant to the photonics industry and has been Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, and Project Evaluator on over a dozen NSF Advanced Technological Education (NSF-ATE) and U.S. Department of Education grants since 1991 involving optics and photonics curriculum & laboratory development, photonics skills standards, teacher professional development, and problem-based learning research.
Judy Donnelly
Professor Emerita @Three Rivers Community College
Judy Donnelly is professor emerita at Three Rivers Community College (Norwich, CT) where she was professor of physics and technology for 36 years and program coordinator for the Laser and Fiber Optic Technology program. She is a senior member and fellow member of both OSA and SPIE. She has served on education committees of both societies as well as other national and international STEM education and outreach initiatives including as principal or co-principal investigator on 9 NSF grants for optics and photonics curriculum & laboratory development, teacher professional development, STEM student support and problem-based learning . She was awarded the Maria J. Yzuel Educator Award by SPIE (2003) and the OSA Esther Hoffman Beller Medal (2012) for outstanding contributions to education in optical science and engineering. She is co-author of the textbook LIGHT-An Introduction to Optics and Photonics (Laurin Publishing).
